Fantasy Midnight magic Really sweet and short storyI received an ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review everything I write is my own opinion Midnight Magic I freely chose to review this ARC as I recently discovered Jane Hinchey and her amazing stories and I was disappointed in this fast paced tale Kristina Gates was hired by the well to do Katharine society madame and paranormal to bake desserts or her son s party but it was the ruthless Ted O Neill that choked on one her cupcakes and died leaving her under suspicion of murder when it was determined that Ted was murdered and her client s cancelling their contracts left and right Her bakery employed several of her Fae friends and her business would tank if she didn t clear her name soon Regardless whether the Paranormal Council sent a Watcher to smooth the situation over she still was on the hook for the murder of a human A BIG NO NO in her world Midnight Magic is a fantasy novella collection by several different authors and as I only read one of the stories it was a fast read that WOWED me at the end Midnight Magic So I ve only just started to read this book so I ll keep you updated as I go I ve read Jane Hinchey s Shadow Shifter story it s a great quick read that I think if she wanted to could turn it into a full novel or even a series The story is about a girl who owns a cake shop and caters an afternoon tea and a guest dies It s basically a murder mystery with a supernatural twist And of course a HEA Midnight Magic The Midnight Magic boxed set contains an incredible 16 URBAN FANTASY STORIES including works by NYT and USA Today bestselling authors Spell binding tales of sorcery survival sacrifice and secrets can be found in this impressive assortment If you enjoy stories about shape shifters magicians ghosts and witches then this is the collection for you Midnight MagicMidnight Magic is a collection of stories by various authors I am reviewing the short story by Ashley Meira entitled Magical Encounters This short story is a prequel to her Magic Dragon Touched series that tells of how Sophia met Symeon I found this story to be quite humorous and a very good introduction to the series My rating is based on this story alone Midnight Magic Sixteen Novellas in collection As always with a collection the works are uneven some amazing and some bad. Midnight magic rhododendron Crimson Metal by Nathan Squiers A mashup of two different novel series by the author to provide exposure to his works which does deliver on the author s promise of working as a stand alone without overloading on exposition The problem is I could not get into either set of protagonists The profanity is so intruding on the dialogue which is suppose to be vulgar but witty exchanges in the lines of Reservoir Dogs I couldn t follow it It kept me from identifying with the first group of characters The second major character just wasn t sympathetic he walked in bribing people promising to kill someone blowing things up etc a good anti hero type but I didn t have time to build interest in him before the action so I didn t care what happened End the end I skipped through at least half the words because I was searching for anything readable about characters I could care for one star Crimson Steel was a really bad choice for the opening to the series as the language is so offputting many readers may not go any further Which would be a shame since some of the rest of the collection is really good. Midnight magic book summary Shadow Shifter by Jane Hinchey Good Lovely light romantic urban fantasy mystery goes for all the comfortable cliques and is a soft warm fuzzy blanket Ending a little too fast and pat highlighting some of the limitations of the Novella form This manuscript could easily have been expanded to double the size before the final reveal and been a satisfying meal instead of just a fun dessert A sex scene four stars Goodreads scale five stars scale Rogue Pack by Art Deforest Nonstop action thriller with wonderful tactics proving an Army of normals is better than a mob of paranormals Loved this Well written tight plotting great characters This is what Urban Fantasy should be five stars Pack What Pack Were by Paul C Middleton Delightful read though has some duplicate word idea issues a good line editor should have caught Example gave Mum a lot of advice next paragraph Your Mother gets advice The world concept and characters were so interesting I went to look what else is available in the Mongrelverse world Mr Middleton has created four stars Hereafter by H. Midnight magician J Lawson Each of the sixteen chapters of this novella reads like a short story complete with a recap of everything which happened before Often pieces of information is introduced bam instead of woven into the storyline something fine for short stories but not for longer works The whole manuscript needs a good edit at least line editing and proofreading but a good structural editing would be beneficial too My biggest killer was chapter four which opens with two weeks later but soon talks about you need to get out of your apartment It s been months from this part forward the timeline gets murky for everything Clearly the writer is a pantser each chapter is read tightly in and of itself but nothing has gone into smoothing the transitions and making the piece a working whole Then there is the problem with everyone using the same terms Giver and Demon which the main character and her sister invented why is the villain using the terms too Oh and the torch issue clearly the writer is English but the characters were from Detroit in America it s a flashlight I nearly quit a few times between the typos and the line editing issues but forced and it was a hard force myself to read to the end The final couple chapters had better transitions less recaps but the sticking something in and changing the rules god in the machine increased If this is a sample of the author s work I don t want to see anything else unless I see an editor s name attached to the byline one star Heat by A. Moonlight magic books L Knorr Another gem which made me look for Solid characters intriguing premise and the eleven chapters of this novella end much too soon 4 stars Gypsy Spirit by Andrea Drew A prequel to the author s Gypsy Medium series The beginning middle and end belonged to three different stories Pleasant but confusing read 3 stars Long break over four months Infernal Challenge by Marian Maxwell Summer hit four cons and some slush reading for a publisher friend developed into a very long break Coming back to pleasure reading this was my first stop and it was not a pleasure I would have rejected it as slush because of the simple sentence structure all the sentences are about the same length and same structure noun verb noun Secondly most of the story is an info dump instead of integrated material I may have liked it if my editing brain wasn t still on high function but as it is this is a total miss 1 star Magical Encounters by Ashley Meira Because I wanted to read something good for me after all the other work I continued and this time was not disappointed This one was lively integrated complex complete characters ongoing action story and backstory reveal flipping perfectly Ahh yeah In addition the main character powers and limitations are intriguing and the story itself both a wonderful plot with advancement of action and characters and wonderful introducing the world and characters Part of the author s Touched by Magic Dragon series Something I am going to mark as interested in based on this short 5 stars In Contract by Carma Haley Shoemaker Lots of sex but main character has no agency 3 stars Shadow Initiate by Todd Skaggs Too convoluted Some people might enjoy this but the timeline of events is hard to follow especially if trying to integrate the prologue Biggest issue is the two point of view characters which is one too many for a short story know things and don t share which makes things even twisted I nearly stopped reading a few times but muddled on because it is only a short story 2 stars Another long break of four or so months Demons and Wraiths by L. Midnight Magic book 1 J Bushman Scottish brogue selkies kelpies and monsters invade Washington state in this clear setup for something Has an ending for the novella but leaves you wanting to find out what comes next I don t see anything in the author s page so it looks like it is still in the works 2 27 2018 4 star Daughter of the Hunt by Alyx Lonsdale The first part of a story the novella is complete in itself Bounces around a bit needs a little honing but a terrific first taste of a fascinating world 4 star Kiss of the Slayer by Crystal Dawn Ever watch a movie where no one can act Where the dialog is wooden and the motives completely cardboard Yeah Like that Also in need of proofing with the joining of their jeans genes I barely managed to complete reading the story Fixing the story would require descriptions and transitions between scenes things were very jumpy 1 star The Voodoo That You Do by J. Kindle Midnight magician L Hendericks Solid introduction to a group of singers sisters all adopted by the same mother Clearly a lead in to a larger world but self contained and stand alone 3 star Friend or Foe by Monica Corwin And a bang for an ending Not sure where this time twister is leading or following time twisting being tricky but the ride totally worth it The story ends but begins something 5 star Average score 3. Midnight Magic epub file 3 Midnight Magic Interesting story and cast of otherworldly charactersI received an Advance Reader Copy for Shadow Shifter written by Jane Hinchey part of the Midnight Magic set and voluntarily reviewed this book This was a sweet romance intertwined with a whodunnit involving a cupcake baked and catered by Katrina Gates at a party The Council who polices supernaturals had sent in Watcher Ben Hoffman to investigate the death now ruled as a murder As Katrina follows the evidence she stirs up trouble exactly as Ben had warned her.
