When you look back at the past you can see just how much has changed Especially during the Civil War women were not allowed to enlist to serve in the war they had to stay home and do what they needed to do But this didn t stop a orphaned 19 year old Josephine Winters Her hair was chopped off she wore boy s clothes one that you will love This is the first book in the Forever Freedom Series and is definitely going to be a best selling series One you will want to add to your bookshelf I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author publisher I was not required to write a positive review All opinions expressed are mine alone Sharlene MacLaren I enjoyed book one in the Forever Freedom series Summer on Sunset Ridge so I m not surprised that Their Daring Hearts is just as good The only thing I took exception to was that Josie is described as slight of stature with fine feminine features yet a unit full of men can t figure out that she is a woman or those who think she is a fourteen year old boy rather than the nineteen year old she claims to be don t turn her in to the authorities Was the Union that desperate for soldiers Having said that the story is well written and obviously well researched References to battle dates and locations are accurate and the fighting scenes are realistic without being gruesome I enjoyed the way Josie s and Levi s friendship develops and despite clues along the way I didn t figure out the identity of the traitor There are a lot of men in the unit to keep track of but the author gives each of them unique characteristics which make them memorable in their own way I liked learning about the Quaker beliefs and Levi s struggle with them is realistic Highly recommended. Their Daring heartsworth nursing I also really enjoyed the bits of humor and faith that kept the story from being too heavy The gruesomeness of war the illnesses that sweep through the camp the emotions driving both Levi and Josie it hits you heavy in the heart But peppered throughout at just the right moments are cute scenes of soldier camaraderie and groan worthy jokes told around a fire Not only does it put a smile on your face but it also nicely alleviates that heaviness Likewise the gentle spiritual conversations that Levi has with dying and or wounded soldiers as well as Gordon wrap around your heart like a warm hug The gospel the fact that none of us is good enough but Jesus stands in our place loves us and has a plan for us is clearly presented than once but avoids feeling as though the story has stopped for a sermon.
