A cri de c ur on the myth and history of Jerusalem Al Quds from the author revered as the greatest living Arabic poet Adonis an Arabic poet with Syrian origins a critic an essayist and a devoted secularist has come out of retirement to pen an extended innovative poem on Jerusalem Al Quds It is a hymn to a troubled city embattled by the conflicting demands of Jews Christians and Muslims Adonis s city as a coveted land ought to suggest the universal love of humanity as a land of tragedy a place of contending history and beliefs and a locus of bitterness conflict hatred rivalry and blood Wrapping multiple voices historical references and political viewpoints within his ecstatic lyricism Adonis has created a provocative work of unique beauty and profound wisdom beautifully rendered in English by award winning poet Khaled Mattawa Concerto al Quds The Margellos World Republic of Letters 96 See of my book reviews on my blog Literary FlitsI admit that I struggled with this long poem It s translation into English by Khaled Mattawa is beautifully done so I could appreciate some of the rhythms and emotions of the Arabic original At times Adonis feels to be justifiably furious at the continued violence and destruction across Jerusalem This focal city for three of the world s mist followed religions ought to be a tranquil serene haven yet perpetual squabbling over religious supremacy has meant it frequently resembles a war zone I love the shocking and powerful imagery used to great effect in short machine gun bursts It contrasts well with softer world weary verses. Book Concerto al-quds-tag Where I came unstuck though was in my lack of knowledge of Jewish Muslim and Christian history and of their respective books I made good use of the comprehensive notes section included in the English edition at the end of the poem This is an excellent resource which allowed me to add an extra layer of understanding to my reading However I feel as though to fully appreciate this great work I need to sit with an expert and discuss Concerto al Quds line by line 96 It is full of imagery emotion historical allusions and lovely turns of phrases well done by the translator There are so many wonderful passages that it is hard to pick just one to demonstrate how powerfully the poem comes across even in translation Ruin is still the daily bread of God s earth Will the prophecies also turn into a siege Will tunnels be burrowed into their words Will their visions splinter into missiles and bombs into volcanoes of gas and phosphor Is it true dear Ezekiel that you have befriended the dragon page 39 96 96 Poes a velada y dolorosa en consonancia con los libros sagrados a los que alude sin olvidar que Jerusal n es un hervidero de contradicciones 96 96 . Concerto al-Quds kindle paperwhite Eliot He approaches modernism as a literary and philosophical movement in a way that seems incredibly compatible with the middle east Which in theory sounds quite bizarre but once you read his poetry it begins to make and sense This specific collection was just really heartbreaking publishes only 3 years ago it is a desperate and cynical celebration of life The entire body of work is filled with mocking imagery of abrahamic religions quotations of islamic literature in the middle of scenes of death and chaos that are portrayed in the most absurd and painful way possible Much like T. Book Concerto al-quds-tag There is so much to talk about here I found my self tearing up a couple of times It s hard to understand how to feel about poetry that is plunging deep into an ongoing unfathomable ugliness 96 Yes it is a difficult poem but one that is worth the occasional struggle Mattawa s notes help a lot help translate the reader if he or she chooses to be translated I admit that my own upbringing one that gave me an intimacy with the Judeo Christian Bible also helped with the references I knew few of the Islamic references but had a context for them The comparisons with Eliot are probably too easy but the montage of fragments these fragments I have stored against my ruin suggests that The single instrument suggested by the title is I m pretty sure the voice of the poet contrasted with the weight of historical literary and religious fragments. Concerto al-Quds kindle reader It is a dark vision of Jerusalem one that doesn t seem to allow much hope for the place to recover from the religious shackles the three traditions have placed on it The current injustices are given full range but it is not a solitary complaint Yet there is something else in the poem I don t want to say hope but a vision of a different end Although the last section ends on death and death descending to end the horrors of the place the penultimate section endsYes I will be taken by the shooting stars glittering in the grotto of love Taken by love. EPub Concerto al-quds al-arabi I know I will continue to struggle with the work of Adonis because I simply don t know enough about the Arabic tradition Muslim and nonMuslim but I think I m slowly getting somewhere 96 96
