Sensitively written and revelatory story of life on the borders of national racial and economic possibility A family story and so much 256 This powerful true story chronicles an extended family in the aftermath of emancipation the failure of Reconstruction and the rise of Jim Crow It brings the challenges faced by freed men and women to create independence and home and the labels of skin color whether white black mulatto or Native American and the blurring of those definitions and the levels of freedom associated with them Another story follows the migration of former American slaves with Chief Sam to the Gold Coast Ghana with the hope better opportunities Each person s efforts seem sisyphean as they struggle against societies committed to hold them down and any success is all the impressive and deserving of this detailed reflection 256 Good insight into how emancipation and the continuing discrimination and prejudice influenced the author s family to migrate from the Mississippi delta to Oklahoma and even to Africa The author outlined why they had to leave their homes and how racism increased after emancipation The stories were interesting but the author tends to repeat herself a lot which made it hard to remain engaged 256 I long anticipated this book and it did not disappoint Kendra Field has a gift for blending history with her family s story She is sensitive and compassionate and at the same time explains that social and political forces that have long shaped that lives of people Native African and European Her story is a truly American one in all it s compelling complexity 256 This book is REALLY good It brings together stories of Black Creek people in Oklahoma Indian sovereignty antiblack racism migration and all kinds of other stuff The fact that it s family history really ties it all together too The only complaint I have is that I would have liked to see the epilogue return to some of the themes from the earlier part of the book but there s a lot of really good stuff in here and it s worth going through the whole thing because each chapter has a different sort of larger theme it addresses through the family history 256 A stellar book engagingly written that combines the history of Indian Territory Oklahoma Afro Creek society Western settlement and Liberian emigration movements into a compelling argument about Black mobility and relationships to regimes of land ownership and American national identity in the generations following the Civil War This is a critical book in the history of African American migratory movements for complicating and bridging the traditional divide between domestic and foreign migration movements 256
