North and centralthirst Off the back of the most recent Willy Vlautin novel I could see similarities between the authors despite the difference in settings for their respective novels I d highly recommend you give this book your time North and Central Andy runs and own a local neighbourhood dive bar in late 70 s Chicago He has a small group of local regulars including Mr Mrs Skeleton Railroad Bob and Doc who are or less permanent fixtures in the bar but his main trade is from a bunch of crooked cops and workers from the Zenith television factory However the area is in the decline as is the bar and in an effort to boost his income Andy turns to crime with some assistance from Fatboy one of his barmen who is ex addict and ex con and two of the cops Jerry and the Reverend This is a just a brilliant piece of crime noir filled with dark humour and colourful and eccentric characters In the first half of the novel Andy basically explains how he runs the bar including the two sets of accounts ledgers the monthly payoffs to the Police wife honey do list This book was a pure pleasure to read North and Central

I got this book and read it straight through in a single sitting I found it so engrossing I couldn t put it down and read until far too late into the night The lack of sleep was worth it Hartley s characters are nuanced and engaging like some combination of spider and fly victims of their own flaws equally trapped in a dark environment and perpetuating the darkness that s destroying them That may sound pretty heavy and it is but Hartley manages to keep it funny and keep it moving so that you continue turning the pages An excellent read North and Central Rounding up here Enjoyed this immensely A gritty noir about a bar owner on Chicago s west side in the late 1970s Drunks and dirty cops Schemes and betrayal A really good read North and Central Bob Hartley s North and Central opens in a bar in a working neighborhood of Chicago in the late 1970s Andy the bartender narrator serves a clientele of factory workers drunks neighborhood characters and cops many of whom are as brazenly corrupt as the city s infamous politicians.
