This memoir by an English surrealist poet astonished the literary world when it was first published in London in 1958 A classic account of O Connor s tormented his father s death his mother s abandonment his youth as a vagrant a madman a promising but impoverished writer Memoirs of A Public BabyI found this really heavy going The writer seems to have been a most unpleasant man though to be fair that s probably his own opinion of himself too He writes in an annoyingly elliptical style Philip OConnor I try very hard to give a book 50 pages but I quit at 36 MIND NUMBING despite having rave reviews from the likes of Norman Mailer Arthur Miller and Saul Bellow COULD NOT DO IT Philip OConnor This authentic work of Outsider Art is a brave and honest attempt at manifesting into words the mind s eye view of an eccentric. Memoirs of a public babyk book This apparently inspired Quentin Crisp s The Naked Civil Servant which in my opinion is a much calmer coherent attempt at explaining the life of an outsider Philip OConnor
