This book was written as though for younger readers but like most books set in this time period 11th 12th century it was a bit rough around the edges I liked the fact that it was set in Russia Scandinavia and that there were many many slavic and scandinavian words scattered throughout the text that made it very interesting to read Also the names were a lot of fun The story itself had some darker parts that would seem to make it for older readers than the tone of the writing which was a bit odd topics include abuse adultery murder torture etc seen through the lens of a young princess being married off to a foreign king who has a mistress and a child by her and does not wish to wed to cement a treaty The story follows Sophie as she grows up and learns that her fairy tale dreams of marriage are nothing like the reality English I m trying to absorb some of Danish ancestry so Cousin Sarah lent me this book which is loosely based on history English My sister picked this up for me at a booksale because she thought it sounded like something I would like hint if it takes place between 1 and 1400 AD I ll like it and she was quite right It s a retelling of a myth I ve never heard before must brush up on my Danish myths huh and it is practically perfect in every way The characters are well rounded the writing is extremely pleasant to read and the research is absolutely superb If anything the ending is a little bit squashed and sudden But hey 12th century Denmark What was I expecting English I found the language a bit complex but was able to get the gist of the conversations I really did like this book and was pained with Sophie grief and sadness The love story was very good and the book was overall great English This book seems like it should be a simple princess marries prince happily ever after But it s not it s full of real world problems mistakes and decisions made not on fairy tale ideals but one concrete needs and wants Characters have wonderful depth for such a short book especially the women The characters make this book interesting people may make bad mean or cruel decisions but not because they re simply bad For example Tove the king s mistress is one of the main problems and is often cruel and passive aggressive However the reader is shown her miserable up bringing and the reasoning behind her actions She s not shown as a mindless villain but as a girl who is tired of her wretched life.
